What is Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States (skin cancer is the most common cancer). Every year, about 170,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 die of the disease.

Women over 40 are encouraged to get annual mammograms and clinical breast exams, and administer breast self-examinations on a regular basis. Women in between the ages of 20 and 39 should have clinical breast exams e
very three years and do monthly breast self-examinations. When breast cancer is caught early, the chances for recovery are much higher.

Who is at risk?

Women more prone to being diagnosed with breast cancer include those who are over 50 years in age, have a family history of breast cancer, have never given birth, or have given birth over the age of 30. Women who started their menstrual cycle early in life and went through menopause late in life are also more susceptible to breast cancer.
