Prostatectomy

A prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate. There are two types of prostatectomies: the first, retropubic prostatectomy, requires an incision in the abdomen to remove the prostate and su
rrounding lymph nodes; the second, perineal prostatectomy, calls for the removal of the prostate through an incision between the scrotum and anus (nearby lymph nodes are removed through the abdomen). If cancer is discovered in the lymph nodes, it is possible that the cancer has spread.
