Sun-Damaged Skin
| |
What Is It?
Sun damage ranges from mild (sunburn) to chronic or severe (changes in color or texture of skin). Strong evidence now suggests that the sun’s ultra violet rays are a primary factor in early aging and wrinkling of the skin. Sun damage is permanent and irreversible.
The accumulated time we spend outside over the course of our lives, compounded by the deteriorating ozone layer, causes sun damaged skin and is believed to instigate various forms of skin cancer. Working outdoors (i.e. professional athletes, landscape artists, environment-oriented jobs, etc.) and those who live in sunny or warm areas are clearly at more risk of getting skin cancer than those who work indoors or live in cooler climates.
Tanning is also known to aggravate forms of skin cancer. Scientists and doctors insist on applying SPF to your skin before engaging in any outdoor activities. Daily moisturizers also come equipped with SPF protection, so it’s becoming more common to wear some form of sun block on a regular basis.
