Basal-Cell Carcinoma

   What Is It?

Basal Cell Carcinoma:

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a type of skin cancer caused by sun damage to the skin. The sun damage that eventually led to cancer was generally experienced many years prior to diagnosis. Basal cell carcinoma is known to enlarge and spread to neighboring areas; the only way to detect whether or not a patient has basal cell carcinoma is to take a biopsy of it. Basal cell carcinoma, if detected, needs to be removed immediately. It is important to also ensure that all of it is removed at once to avoid the possibility of spreading. Surgery, however, almost always leaves a scar. In fact, doctors do not know how to prevent scarring when removing basal cell carcinoma through surgical means. And it is important to keep in mind that what is seen on the skin’s surface is often just a small part of the entire cancerous growth. Patients are often surprised at the amount of skin that has to be removed in order to completely take out all of the cancer.
