Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second-highest diagnosed cancer amongst women in the United States. Close to 200,000 are diagnosed every year, and tens of thousands die of the disease. Early diagnosis has proven to be significant factor in the patient’s success of fighting it.
Contrary to popular belief, breast cancer is not more prevalent in women who have a family history of the disease. Though this is certainly a strong indication that a woman may
get breast cancer, not having children or having children over the age of 30 may also increase a woman’s chances.
Since women who are older tend to be diagnosed more often than women younger than 40, older women are encouraged to have a mammogram and a clinical breast exam every year as well as conduct breast self-exams on a monthly basis. Women under the age of 40 are advised to have a clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional every three years and also conduct breast self-exams every month.
